(c) It is against international law to subject prisoners<br />

to torture to secure information. However, if a<br />

prisoner is subject to such treatment, they must make<br />

every effort to avoid providing information.<br />

(6) Article VI: I will never forget that I am an American,<br />

fighting for freedom, responsible for my actions, and<br />

dedicated to the principles which made my country free. I<br />

will trust in my God and in the United States of America.<br />

(a) <strong>Navy</strong> personnel who become prisoners of war have an<br />

obligation to remain loyal to the United States.<br />

(b) Upon release, prisoners of war will have their actions<br />

reviewed regarding the circumstances of their capture<br />

and conduct while a prisoner, with consideration for<br />

the conditions of captivity.<br />

4. Purpose and Provisions of the Geneva Convention of 1949<br />

a. In 1949, an international convention in Geneva, Switzerland<br />

established rules for the treatment of prisoners of war. <strong>The</strong><br />

agreements were to be followed by all nations.<br />

b. Most countries of the world abide by the articles of the Geneva<br />

Convention.<br />

c. This lesson summarizes some of the articles.<br />

(1) Article 13<br />

(a) Prisoners of war are to be:<br />

1 Treated humanely.<br />

2 Protected against insults and public curiosity.<br />

(b) Prisoners of war are not to be:<br />

1 Murdered or exterminated.<br />

2 Subjected to torture or scientific experiments.<br />

(2) Article 14--women shall be treated with all consideration<br />

due to their gender.<br />

(3) Article 17--Punishment of prisoner for refusing to answer<br />

questions other than their name, date of birth, rate, and<br />

social security number is prohibited.<br />

(4) Articles 25 through 28--Prisoners are to be provided decent<br />

housing, nourishing food, and adequate clothing.<br />
