9. Relationship Between the <strong>Navy</strong> Core Values and the UCMJ<br />

a. Honor--To behave within the guidelines of the UCMJ is the<br />

honorable duty of every sailor.<br />

b. Courage--When tempted by others, have the courage to comply with<br />

the UCMJ.<br />

c. Commitment--Be committed to behaving according to the rules and<br />

regulations of the UCMJ.<br />

10. Purpose of the U.S. <strong>Navy</strong> Regulations<br />

a. <strong>The</strong> principle regulatory document of the U.S. <strong>Navy</strong>. It outlines<br />

the:<br />

(1) Origin, authority, mission, and elements of the Department<br />

of the <strong>Navy</strong>.<br />

(2) Procedures for conducting ceremonies, honors, and customs.<br />

b. Specifies procedures for awarding NJP, conducting Captain’s Mast,<br />

and anything unique to the <strong>Navy</strong> that is not covered in the UCMJ.<br />

c. Describes your rights and responsibilities as a <strong>Navy</strong> member.<br />

d. It is your responsibility to know <strong>Navy</strong> regulations; ignorance is<br />

no excuse.<br />

11. Types of Punitive and Administrative Discharges<br />

a. Punitive discharges Personnel convicted of a crime will most<br />

likely be punitively discharged from the <strong>Navy</strong>.<br />

(1) Dishonorable--Applies only to enlisted persons and warrant<br />

officers who are not commissioned. Awarded only as directed<br />

by a general court-martial for serious offenses that call<br />

for dishonorable separation as part of the punishment.<br />

(2) Bad Conduct--Applies only to enlisted persons. Awarded only<br />

as directed by a special or general court-martial.<br />

b. Types of discharges<br />

(1) Honorable--Awarded to personnel with good to excellent<br />

service.<br />

(2) General--Awarded in the absence of a sufficiently<br />

meritorious military record to deserve an honorable<br />

discharge.<br />
