7. U.S. <strong>Navy</strong> Tobacco Use Policy<br />

a. Background<br />

(a) Intervene before excessive drinking occurs.<br />

(b) Stop a shipmate from driving under the influence<br />

of alcohol.<br />

(c) Challenge inappropriate behavior resulting from<br />

alcohol use.<br />

(1) Tobacco products are cigarettes, pipe tobacco, cigars, or<br />

____________ tobacco (chewing tobacco, snuff, dip, etc.).<br />

(2) Tobacco use has been determined to be the most preventable<br />

cause of illness and death in the United States. It kills<br />

more than 400,000(19 percent of total deaths) annually.<br />

b. Policy<br />

(1) It is the <strong>Navy</strong>’s policy to:<br />

(a) Support abstinence.<br />

(b) Discourage the use of tobacco products.<br />

(c) Create a healthy working environment.<br />

(d) Provide encouragement and ____________ assistance<br />

to stop smoking.<br />

(e) Provide a tobacco cessation program.<br />

(2) It is DON (Department of the <strong>Navy</strong>) policy that smoke-free<br />

DON facilities be established to protect all DON civilians<br />

and military personnel and members of the public visiting<br />

or using DON facilities from the health hazards caused by<br />

exposure to tobacco smoke.<br />

(3) Tobacco use outdoors is prohibited except in designated<br />

tobacco use areas.<br />

(a) Outside tobacco use areas shall be well<br />

____________ and policed. <strong>The</strong>y shall not be at<br />

front entrance areas of buildings.<br />
