10. Account Management<br />

(a) Short Term-save $500 within 3-6 months<br />

(b) Secondary or Long Term Goal- save an amount equal to 3<br />

times your monthly expenses<br />

a. Check with your bank or credit union each payday to verify the<br />

amount of your deposit either online or by phone.<br />

b. Record that amount in your register<br />

(1) In the beginning your amounts may be irregular due to your<br />

pay date and processing of your DDS paperwork.<br />

(a) Your pay will normalize after a month or two<br />

c. Remember when you write a check that is your promise to pay.<br />

Always ensure there are sufficient funds to cover that check.<br />

Don’t wait for it to clear before writing it down in your<br />

register and subtracting from your available funds.<br />

d. Paying Bills<br />

(1) Contact your creditors if payment will be late because of<br />

enlistment in the <strong>Navy</strong><br />

(2) Bills can be paid by:<br />

(a) Personal check or electronically<br />

1 Ensure you have sufficient funds in your account<br />

2 Your checks and debit cards will be issued to you<br />

in a couple of weeks by the representative you<br />

select today<br />

(b) Money Orders<br />

(3) Later as part of your military training, you will receive<br />

instruction on how to write checks, maintain a checkbook<br />

register and checking account reconciliation.<br />

(4) While at <strong>Recruit</strong> <strong>Training</strong> <strong>Command</strong> and your follow-on<br />

command, you have access to a <strong>Command</strong> Financial Specialist<br />

that can assist you with basic checking account management.<br />

11. What to look for in a financial institution<br />

a. Choose a financial institution that has a location that will<br />

be convenient for you<br />
