h. Do NOT touch open wounds or burns with fingers or objects, unless<br />

necessary; e.g., to stop severe bleeding.<br />

i. Do NOT give an unconscious person anything by mouth to prevent<br />

choking or aspiration.<br />

j. Use extreme care and caution when treating a suspected fracture.<br />

(1) Immobilize broken or suspected broken bones before moving<br />

the victim.<br />

(2) Do NOT attempt to set fractures (broken bones); this may<br />

cause further injury.<br />

k. Transport the victim with feet first down ladders and head first<br />

up ladders. <strong>The</strong> person at the head observes the victim’s<br />

breathing. Victim’s can be transported on the following<br />

stretchers:<br />

(1) Stokes stretcher--Used to transfer victims from boats or<br />

ships.<br />

(2) Miller board--Used to vertically move victims.<br />

(3) Spine board used to immobilize victims with possible spinal<br />

injury.<br />

(4) Army litter–-Used for transporting battle casualties.<br />

l. Keep the victim comfortably warm to alleviate or reduce shock.<br />

5. Procedures for Performing the Three Primary Tasks of First Aid<br />

a. Three tasks<br />

(1) Maintain breathing<br />

(2) Stop bleeding<br />

(3) Prevent or reduce shock<br />

b. Maintain breathing (for choking victim)<br />

(1) Conscious victim<br />

(a) Symptoms<br />

1 Person will clutch their throat. This is the<br />

universal distress signal.<br />

2 With total airway obstruction, the victim cannot<br />

speak, cough, or breathe.<br />
