BASIC SEAMANSHIP, PART 2--LINES, WIRE ROPES,<br />

SMALL BOATS, AND SOUND-POWERED TELEPHONES<br />

This lesson provides the basic information about lines and wire ropes that<br />

you will need for the basic seamanship laboratories. During your <strong>Navy</strong><br />

career, you will be working or riding in small boats. This lesson discusses<br />

the types of small boats used by the <strong>Navy</strong> and the safety precautions for<br />

small boat passengers. In addition, this lesson will also teach you about<br />

sound-powered telephones. <strong>The</strong>y are one of the most commonly used<br />

communication devices aboard ship.<br />

B. Enabling Objective(s):<br />

4.1 Identify the types, characteristics, and sizes of lines and wire<br />

ropes.<br />

4.2 Identify the purpose of a square knot and bowline.<br />

4.3 Tie a Square knot and bowline using small stuff.<br />

4.4 Explain the procedures to secure equipment for sea.<br />

4.5 Explain the definitions of basic line handling and anchoring terms.<br />

3.1 Identify the types, purposes, and characteristics of small boats.<br />

3.2 Identify the safety precautions applicable to a passenger in a<br />

small boat<br />
