(c) Keep person lying down with legs elevated 6 to 12<br />

inches. Do NOT elevate legs if you suspect:<br />

1 Head or spinal injuries.<br />

2 An injured hip or leg.<br />

(d) If vomiting, place person on side.<br />

(e) Keep person warm; maintain warm body temperature.<br />

(f) If the person has difficulty breathing, help into a<br />

sitting or semi-sitting position.<br />

(g) Do NOT give anything by mouth.<br />

(h) Reassure the person.<br />

(i) Seek medical assistance as soon as possible.<br />

6. Characteristics and Proper Treatment of Skin Wounds<br />

a. Types<br />

(1) Incision: Margins are smooth with little damage to<br />

surrounding skin. Caused by a sharp cutting instrument<br />

such as a knife, razor, or broken glass.<br />

(2) Laceration: Skin is torn rather than cut. Caused by blunt<br />

force such as a tire iron or baseball bat.<br />

(3) Puncture: Skin is pierced by a pointed object, such as a<br />

bullet, nail, or knife.<br />

(4) Abrasion: Skin is rubbed or scraped off.<br />

(5) Avulsion: Skin is torn loose or left hanging as a flap.<br />

Caused by an accident involving machinery such as lawn<br />

mowers and power tools.<br />

b. Treatment--If the wound is fresh:<br />

(1) Stop the flow of blood.<br />

(2) Treat for shock.<br />

(3) Reduce the risk of infection by using clean or sterile<br />

dressings.<br />
