(e) Transport person to the nearest medical facility as<br />

soon as possible.<br />

(1) Causes<br />

(a) Working or exercising in a hot environment.<br />

(b) A breakdown of the body’s sweating mechanism.<br />

(2) Symptoms<br />

(a) Body temperature 105 degrees Fahrenheit (41 degrees<br />

centigrade) or higher.<br />

(b) Small perspiration.<br />

(c) Skin is hot, dry, reddish, and flushed.<br />

(d) Very dilated pupils (constricted).<br />

(e) Mental confusion and anxiety.<br />

(f) Convulsions and sudden collapse.<br />

(3) Treatment<br />

(a) Life threatening; requires prompt action. <strong>The</strong> brain,<br />

kidney, and liver may be damaged due to the failure of<br />

the body's heat regulating mechanism.<br />

(b) Move person to shade or cooler area.<br />

(c) Reduce body temperature by removing as much clothing<br />

as possible.<br />

(d) Sponge person with cold wet towels and fan person to<br />

promote evaporation. Never apply ice directly to the<br />

skin. This may cause frostbite.<br />

(e) If victim can drink, give him/her one-half a glass of<br />

cool water every 15 minutes.<br />

(f) Treat for shock.<br />

(g) Transport to nearest medical facility as soon as<br />

possible.<br />
