“They are just crying for attention.” This is Mother’s last line in
Blowing, speaking to Father about their children, who have packed
their bags and are leaving home. But her words also apply to herself
and Father. They keep themselves and their children imprisoned in
a web of lies and illusions. Father is having an affair with Mother’s
sister. Mother knows, but tries to keep up the illusion of a happy
family and portrays herself as a youthful, attractive woman. Her
birthday brunch finally gets on its way after a few false starts, but
the foundations of happiness have long been crumbling. The son,
Jurgen, delivers the final blow: “However hard we try, however
often we start again, this is simply a rotten birthday and that’s all
it will ever be”. Mother is given a video camera for her birthday,
but cannot capture an image of a happy family. Jurgen grabs the
camera and whilst filming, asks insinuating questions to reach the
‘truth’. “I see a woman of 45 with wrinkles, sagging breasts and
a fat arse,” he says, filming his mother. The family is mirrored by
the home itself: it is closed off by roll-down shutters. Intended to
keep burglars out, they really shut the occupants in. It is ice-cold,
draughty and plaster is crumbling from the ceiling onto the lamp
below. Eventually, everyone wants to leave. Father has saved up
to leave with his new girlfriend, the children pack their bags and
Mother also packs her suitcase. But, in the end, the parents are too
weak to leave. The children aren’t, and they walk out.
« C’est juste un grand hurlement pour attirer l’attention ». Voilà la
phrase par laquelle la mère termine Souffler. Elle indique ainsi au
père que leurs enfants ont préparé leurs sacs à dos pour quitter le
domicile parental. Mais ces mots sont, en premier lieu, symboliques
pour les parents eux-mêmes. Ils les gardent, eux ainsi que leurs
enfants, prisonniers d’un filet de mensonges et d’illusions. Il s’avère
que le Père a une liaison avec la soeur de la Mère ; celle-ci est au
courant, mais essaie de préserver la façade d’une famille heureuse,
se présentant elle-même comme une femme jeune et séduisante.
Pourtant, afin que son brunch d’anniversaire puisse se dérouler
comme souhaité, il doit être recommencé à plusieurs reprises.
C’est la première fois que les membres de la famille font cela,
mais les fondements du bonheur s’effritent déjà depuis quelque
temps. Jurgen, le fils, profite de cette réunion de famille pour dire
brutalement ce qu’il en pense. La situation de la famille se reflète
dans leur maison qui est, tout entière fermée par des volets censés
retenir les cambrioleurs à l’extérieur, mais qui, en réalité, enferment
les occupants à l’intérieur. Il fait un froid glacial, il y a des courants
d’air et des lambeaux de plafond tombent sur la lampe qui se
trouve juste en dessous. Chacun aimerait partir. On apprend que le
père a économisé un peu d’argent pour quitter la maison avec sa
nouvelle copine, les enfants font leurs sacs à dos et la Mère aussi
fait sa valise. Mais les parents sont définitivement trop faibles pour
s’en aller. Il n’y a que les enfants qui réaliseront leur projet.
