Surrounded by botanical encyclopaedias, souvenirs from his
journeys and love affairs, Vanni, a professor of botanical science,
is dying of a degenerative disease. Brilliant and extravagant, funny
and moody, sweet and cynical (and single) Vanni has spent all his
life travelling the world, seeking out undiscovered plants, studying
them and cataloguing them. He is nursed by his sister Rosa; an
affectionate, simple and sensible woman with a strong personality.
She is fond of her brother but still argues with him every day. Their
quarrels are the comic counterpoint to the inevitable ticking away
of time. Sibilla is a young woman, a graduate pupil of Vanni’s, who
once accompanied him on a scientific journey to Thailand. A few
years later, Sibilla asks Vanni to write the preface to her latest
botanical science book. Daphne is a plant that Vanni discovered
and named after the nymph who bewitched Apollo. This unique and
mysterious plant, which grows in Borneo, is not only capable of
giving death, but is also an example of the eternity of natural life.
With these elements, Franceschi lays out a lively plot that moves the
audience to tears but also to laughter and addresses the subjects of
euthanasia, love, jealousy, science and disillusion.
Entouré de livres de botanique, de souvenirs de voyage et d’amour,
Vanni, professeur de botanique, est mourant. Génial et extravagant,
drôle et lunatique, doux et cynique, ce vieux garçon a passé toute
sa vie à voyager à travers le monde entier à la recherche de plantes
inconnues qu’il a étudiées et cataloguées attentivement... A son
coté, sa soeur Rosa, infirmière affectueuse, douce et forte, une
femme douée de bon sens. Elle est très liée à son frère mais elle ne
peut éviter de discuter avec lui quotidiennement et leurs disputes
font un contrepoint comique au tic-tac inévitable du temps... Sibilla
est une jeune femme, ancienne élève de Vanni qui, juste après la
maîtrise, le suit dans un voyage de recherche en Thaïlande. Après
des années d’absence, Sibilla réapparaît pour demander à Vanni de
rédiger l’introduction à son nouveau livre de botanique... Daphné
est une plante découverte par Vanni qui a pris le nom de la nymphe
qui fit tomber amoureux Apollon. Exemplaire unique et mystérieux
provenant de la région de Bornéo, la plante est dispensatrice de
mort mais aussi simulacre de l’éternité de la Nature. A l’aide de
ces éléments, Franceschi est capable de construire une histoire
qui émeut, mais peut aussi pousser à sourire, capable de parler
d’euthanasie, d’amour et de jalousie, de science et de désillusion en
utilisant avec bonheur une dramaturgie efficace et drôle.
