Finding identity in 19 fragments. The play is set on the platform
of an old railway station, in the middle of nowhere, somewhere
to the ‘east’. Two strange types, Viktor and Kornel, philosophise
about being and waiting. They know they are in a theatre, and they
are aware that the imminent train could prove to be just a sound
effect. Other characters like Theatre Director, Bride, Suicide man
and Domina appear. Their arrival gives momentary meaning to
Viktor and Kornel’s inertia as these characters bring with them the
possibility of confrontation. Suddenly an Angel gives the characters
their real memories. Perhaps time has stopped. Perhaps Viktor and
Kornel are themselves two fallen angels, who have forgotten their
identity and their mission. Platform is strongly connected to the
experience of the post-communist citizen, and is both very ‘eastern’
and very uncertain in its tone.
Une recherche d’identité en 19 fragments. Nous nous trouvons
sur le quai d’une vieille gare quelque part près de l’est (au milieu
de nulle part). Deux personnages étranges (Viktor et Kornel)
commencent leur dialogue, leur drôle et étrange philosophie d’être
et d’attendre. Être là et attendre un train qui pourrait être rien
qu’un bruit parce qu’ils savent toujours que nous sommes au
théâtre. Quelques autres personnages arrivent : le directeur du
théâtre, Bride, l’homme suicidaire, « Domina » entrent en conflit
avec les deux premiers tout en leur fournissant quelques raisons de
continuer leur vie immobile. Juste pour une seconde. Subitement,
un ange leur apporte leur vraie mémoire. Oui, il y a peut-être deux
anges déchus qui ont oublié leur identité, leur mission et peutêtre
le temps s’est arrêté ici. Le quai est une pièce modèle et en
même temps fortement liée au sentiment du citoyen de l’ère postcommuniste,
près de l’ « est » et très loin de toute certitude.
