The first farm represents the general situation in the countryside: poverty, hopelessness and drinking. On the second farm, people try to overcome circumstance, and live life according to high moral principles. As in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the children from both families are in love. However their different interests and different attitudes to life mean that they cannot be together. Scènes de la vie quotidienne de la campagne lettone, dans deux fermes. La ligne principale de la pièce est basée sur deux fermes. L’une d’elle représente la situation générale de la campagne – pauvreté, désespoir, alcoolisme. Dans l’autre, les habitants essaient de vivre selon leurs principes hautement moraux en dépit des circonstances. Comme chez Shakespeare, les enfants s’aiment. Mais ils ne peuvent rester ensemble en raison de leurs divergences face à la vie.
