The play is not merely a tragic look at the lives of the young
Estonian men who fought in Afghanistan. Missionaries also carries
a message to the Estonia of tomorrow and to the whole world.
Through sincere and simple memories, we become acquainted with
the thoughts and emotions of men who had to stay in a foreign
country, carry a weapon and be ruled by a foreign authority. The
author, also the director, has not painted a gruesome picture of
the horrors of war – rather, as an analyst, she concentrates on the
human issues that only arise out of extreme circumstances. In
Missionaries, one can find joy in a friend’s survival. Happiness can
lie in dried bread and canned cheese. One can smile because an
innocent soul has not been killed pointlessly. No war can be right, no
matter how justified and legal it might be. These are the issues that
the company is dealing with. Thanks to its poignant topic, the play
has gained the attention of politicians and theatre specialists, not
to mention the audience. Missionaries is based on interviews with
men who fought in Afghanistan, and on Dee Brown’s book, Bury My
Heart at Wounded Knee, about the Indian wars. The bridge between
these two wars was inspired by the childhood journal of one of the
men who fought in Afghanistan.
La pièce n’est pas seulement une introspection pénible a posteriori
sur les vies de jeunes gens estoniens qui ont combattu en
Afghanistan. Les missionnaires portent un message pour l’Estonie
de demain ainsi que pour le monde entier. A travers l’évocation
sincère de souvenirs, les spectateurs font connaissance avec les
pensées et les émotions d’hommes forcés à porter une arme dans
un pays étranger, commandés par un pouvoir étranger. Pourtant,
l’auteur n’a pas peint une image atroce des horreurs de la guerre,
mais il analyse les problèmes humains qui se présentent dans des
situations extrêmes. Dans Les missionnaires, on peut trouver de la
joie simplement humaine à la survie d’un copain. Le bonheur peut
se trouver dans les biscottes ou le fromage en conserve. On peut
sourire quand on n’a pas tué sans raison une personne innocente.
Aucune guerre ne peut être justifiée, peu importe qu’elle soit
motivée ou légale. La pièce traite de cette question. Par son thème
la pièce a gagné l’intérêt des hommes politiques et des spécialistes
du théâtre, sans parler des spectateurs. Elle est basée sur des
interviews d’hommes ayant combattu en Afghanistan et sur le livre
Enterre mon coeur à Wounded Knee (Bury My Heart at Wounded
Knee) de Dee Brown. La connexion entre ces deux guerres est
inspirée par le journal d’enfance d’un de ces hommes.
