Vassily Sigarev 1977
top
toupie
In the dark and cruel depths of society, a little girl tells of her
desperate quest for maternal love. A spinning top which she always
has on her is the only toy her mother ever gave her... The great
Russian poet Ossip Mandelstam said that tragedy is revealed
wherever there arises the risk of losing what at all cost must not be
lost. With Top, Vassily Sigarev claims his place as a representative
of the dramatic genre which I would call crude tragedy (maternaïa
traguedia in Russian). The author of over twenty plays, translated
and performed in several languages, Sigarev has received numerous
awards, including being presented the prize for ‘most promising
contemporary playwright’ by Tom Stoppard during the Evening
Standard Awards ceremony in 2002.
