Renato Gabrielli 1966
salviamo i bambini
saving the children
sauvons les enfants
The starting point of this play is a glance – the enigmatic and
empty look of a child from far away staring at a woman’s face. This
woman belongs to our world. Maybe she is a benefactor to that
child. Maybe he is looking at her through a webcam, on the internet
– a webcam that she has bought for him. She would like to get lost
in those baby eyes, like in a dream of pure love and unconditioned
affection, but she can’t. The woman runs an ethical company, selling
household items, and her innate humanitarianism and concern
about balancing profits with morality are her raison d’être. Through
the webcam, Gaia is trying to display a perfect image of morality,
but the only characters appearing alongside her during this on-line
chat with the lucky beneficiary are a loud and racist housewife
and the woman’s lover (an eccentric ethical brand manager) who
reveal how empty and consumerist her way of life really is. And the
unexpected visit from a priest, who has been informed about some
of the company’s non-ethical procedures, leads Gaia to confusion,
a growing guilt complex and fear of retribution. During the final
battle against her interlocutor, she struggles with the endless
difficulty of wanting to do good in a world that is stuck in its ways
– a world where even good old mystery has to hide behind the mask
of farce and absurdity.
