Silence and the total absence of colour recreate the tragedy
of Vincent Van Gogh when he was locked up in the St Paul
sanatorium, and explores concisely and with great clarity his
desperate need for liveliness. The starkness helps to reconstruct
the cruel visual world of his torment and of his daily battle against
his persecutors and against the ambiguity of his brother Theo.
The originality of the text lies in its attempt to subconsciously
transport the audience from what seems to be an objective – if
slightly artificial-looking – reality, to the subjective experience of
the patient. It shows us the human perspective on the psychiatric
ward, and makes us question whether the brother’s visit is in fact a
mental projection. The play delivers its story against the background
of pure white – the colour of torture.
Dans le silence et l’absence absolue de couleur, se déroule la
tragédie de Vincent Van Gogh, enfermé dans le sanatorium de
St. Paul. La pièce recrée, avec une grande clarté et une capacité
de concision, le besoin désespéré de vie, éprouvé par le célèbre
peintre. Grâce à un style limpide, tendu, d’une rare instantanéité
dramatique, capable de nous restituer ce tourment avec une férocité
expressive immédiate, la pièce met en scène le rapport quotidien
de l’artiste avec ses persécuteurs et sa lutte avec l’ambiguïté
de son frère Theo. La grande originalité de ce texte consiste à
nous conduire de façon imperceptible d’une réalité apparemment
objective, mais qui s’avère subtilement artificielle, à un face à face
avec le vécu du malade. En nous guidant dans des perspectives
d’une psychiatrie à visage humain et en nous faisant observer la
visite du frère comme une possible projection mentale, Stefano
Massini nous entraîne dans le blanc absolu de la torture.
