There are four characters in the play. The first two, Chra and Yokram, are a well-to-do Dutch couple in their fifties. He is a philosophy lecturer at the university, she is a businesswoman. Attergal, a family friend also in his fifties, works for the council in Amsterdam. He has recently picked up a much younger, exotic boyfriend named Kilo in a park in Santiago (Chile), and has invited him back to the Netherlands. The friendship between Yokram and Attergal dates back to the squatters’ movement in the 1980s, but there is little left of their nihilistic ‘no future’ ideals. As a politician, Attergal at least attempts to put some of his leftist beliefs into practice, but soon he is relieved from office. Yokram dreams up a new utopia for himself and his wife. But Chra wants nothing to do with utopian talk. She is ill with cancer and doesn’t have long to live. The middle-aged characters project their anxiety and their longings onto the silent foreigner. They see him as a shrewd scrounger, but he also incarnates the unspoiled nature-boy, who can give them what they have long lost: strong, simple love. The boy from overseas, however, declines to play that role and returns to his native country. Geslacht se passe en 2020. Chra et Yokram, un couple hollandais aisé, la cinquantaine ; elle est femme d’affaires, il enseigne la philosophie à l’université. Leur ami, Attergal, également la cinquantaine, est membre du conseil municipal d’Amsterdam. Récemment, dans un parc à Santiago (Chili), il s’est trouvé un amant exotique, de trente-cinq ans plus jeune que lui, qui s’appelle Kilo et qu’Attergal a emmené aux Pays-Bas. L’amitié ente Yokram et Attergal remonte à l’époque du mouvement des squatters dans les années 1980, mais de leurs idées nihilistes du « no future » il ne reste plus grand-chose. En tant qu’homme politique Attergal essaie cependant de mettre en pratique quelques une de ses utopies gauchistes, mais il est démis de ses fonctions. Yokram imagine une nouvelle vie avec sa femme. Mais Chra n’a rien à faire de ces conversations utopistes. Elle est malade : son corps est rongé par un cancer, il ne lui reste plus beaucoup de temps à vivre. Les quatre personnages au passage difficile de la cinquantaine projettent leurs angoisses et leurs désirs sur l’étranger silencieux. Ils le voient comme un parasite habile, mais il incarne également le garçon naturel et innocent qui peut leur donner ce qu’ils ont perdu il y a longtemps : l’amour fort et simple. Mais le garçon refuse de jouer ce rôle et retourne dans son pays.
