The play is based on the real life of Leon Sergeievich Theremin – an
inventor, musician and spy. In 1920 Theremin invented a musical
instrument called the ‘theremin’, which to this day is the only
non-contact musical instrument in the world. Theremin was sent
by Lenin on a concert tour around Russia followed by a concert
series abroad, organized by the newly formed Soviet Secret Service
GRU. It is Theremin’s time in the United States that constitutes
the actual plot of the play. After initially meeting great success and
enthusiasm in America, grand plans to establish the theremin as a
popular musical instrument for the wider public were dashed by the
Great Depression. Then Theremin’s personal life began to fall apart.
Deportation procedures were brought against him and when he
married his music student Lavinia Williams, twenty years his junior
and an African American, he was ostracized socially. Abandoned
and forgotten, Theremin received news of his father’s death and
decided to return to Russia. It was 1938, Stalin’s purges were in
full swing... Beyond the dramatization of this journey, Theremin is a
portrait of a controversial and a peculiar human being caught in the
torrents of 20th century history.
La pièce s’inspire de la vie de Léon Sergueïevitch Theremin
– inventeur, musicien et espion. Né en 1897 à Saint-Pétersbourg,
Theremin fait sa grand invention en 1920 : un instrument de
musique appelé « Thereminvox » qui, jusqu’à ce jour, est le seul
instrument de musique du monde qu’on joue sans le toucher.
Theremin le montre à Lénine qui s’enthousiasme pour cet
instrument et y voit une occasion magnifique de promouvoir
la « nouvelle musique révolutionnaire ». Sur ordre de Lénine,
Theremin part en tournée en Russie, puis en Europe et finalement
aux Etats-Unis. Parallèlement, il commence à travailler comme
agent pour le service du GRU. En Amérique, Theremin obtient un
succès considérable, si bien qu’il y reste dix années et commence
même à commercialiser son instrument en masse. Mais le vent
tourne. Il s’est marié avec une Afro-Américaine et est mis au ban
de la société. Lorsqu’il apprend la mort de son père, il décide de
rentrer dans son pays. C’est en 1938, les purges de Staline sont en
plein essor... Theremin est le portrait d’un homme controversé et
particulier, pris dans les courants du 20è siècle et incapable d’être
libre dans ses vocations, ses actes et ses désirs.
