The Praça Roosevelt is a square in the heart of São Paulo, where
offices, brothels, bars, a bingo hall and a seamstress’ shop stand
side by side. This intersection also marks the crossroads of the
various characters’ lives: here begins the story of the honest
policeman who one evening spots his son dealing drugs. Here a
cancer-suffering secretary named Concha arranges to meet her best
friend Aurora, a transvestite. Here Concha’s boss, a reformed arms
manufacturer who has recently made all his employees redundant,
falls in love with a girl: a bingo-caller named Bingo. Here the
unemployed Raimundo (known as Mundo) who proves to be an
excellent listener, sat down one day and sits here still. All of them
have their own hopes and dreams, despite spending most of their
days simply surviving – and those less successful, meeting their
ever-near deaths. The author cleverly weaves together the past with
the present, allows the living to mingle with the dead and always
interrupts the theatrical illusion just when one is beginning to feel
comfortable. Dea Loher is rightly acclaimed as one of Germany’s
most literate playwrights. Her South American Praça Roosevelt
is less exotic than realistic: its dreams and desolation have long
become global truths.
La « Praça Roosevelt » est un square au cœur de São Paulo : des
bureaux, des bordels, des bars, une salle pour jouer au Bingo, la
boutique d’un retoucheur en confection... Sur cette place se croisent
les histoires des différents personnages – la plupart par hasard et
souvent seulement furtivement : voici que commence l’histoire d’un
policier qui ne fait pas d’affaires sales, mais qui, un soir, voit son
fils en train de dealer. Ici la secrétaire Concha, atteinte d’un cancer,
rencontre sa meilleur copine, Aurora, un travesti. Le patron de
Concha, un fabricant d’armes qui ne veut plus en fabriquer et qui
a licencié tous ses employés, tombe amoureux de Bingo. C’est ici
que le chômeur Raimundo, appelé Mundo, s’est tout simplement
assis et y est resté assis, lui qui sait si bien écouter. Ils ont tous un
rêve pour leur vie, mais ils sont tous occupés du matin au soir à
survivre – et y trouvent bien trop facilement la mort. L’auteur mêle
avec grande adresse le passé et le présent, réunit les vivants et les
morts, casse l’illusion théâtrale chaque fois au moment où on s’y
est installé confortablement. C’est à juste titre que Dea Loher passe
pour une des auteurs dramatiques allemands qui maîtrise le mieux
la langue. Sa Praça Roosevelt sud-américaine est moins exotique
que réaliste : depuis longtemps, les rêves et la misère sont devenus
– comme tant d’autres choses – mondiaux.
