Händl Klaus 1969
dunkel lockende welt
darkly tempting world
un monde qui séduit obscurément
One: Leipzig. Corinna, a young doctor, is moving house. She is
going to Peru, to live with her boyfriend. While handing over the
keys to her new tenant Joachim, they fall into conversation. Until
he notices an unusual object: in a corner of the room lies a human
toe. Two: Munich, the apartment of Corinna’s mother, Mechtild.
Instead of to Peru, Corinna has come here. Corinna sends Mechtild
to fetch the toe, the only thing still binding her to Leipzig. Three:
Leipzig, a building site. Joachim’s house is reduced to rubble. Under
an improvised shelter of blankets, Mechtild and Joachim get to
know one another. They continue the conversation interrupted by
Corinna’s sudden departure. In the corner, a cat vomits up a small
bone. The world as a mirage, in which every open door can lead to
a pitfall or a dead end, an inner core which has mislaid its outer
shell. In the shadowplay of words, interrupted sentence fragments
coalesce to form a semitransparent layer which hides as much as it
reveals. Händl Klaus’ characters drift about like sleepwalkers; they
encounter, attract and repel one another. Death seems a continual
presence, a familiar if bizarre one for some, more a fact than a
menace. Death and desire – this combination attains in Händl
Klaus’ words a new, gentle quality, repeatedly misleading the reader.
