Demon Sale is a play about the impossibility of escaping from
one’s family and one’s roots. The play presents the collision of two
cultures on several different levels: that of Benko Kotar (40) and
Simone (25), an anthropologist. Simone is of Bulgarian-Greek-
German origin. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, her nouveau riche
parents went to live in Florida. Following the method of semantic
anthropology, Simone is recording her field study – the subculture
of the Kotar gypsy clan – on video, for her doctoral thesis as well
as for a film project. And, in order to be rapidly accepted by the
group, Simone makes Benko Kotar her provisional lover. Benko is
half Bulgarian and is deluding himself that he is different from the
rest of his clan. Simone’s mother has learnt, in Florida, that her
daughter is involved in a sexual relationship with a gypsy and has
hired a detective agency to put an end to this affair. The detectives
stage the kidnapping and sale of Simone as a white slave in Kosovo.
They tell her she was sold by Benko Kotar and his brother Gogo
Mourdar. And as the clan’s business cannot be jeopardised, Benko is
asked by his family to go to prison in his brother’s place. The gypsy
family organises a joyful party to mark the day Benko Kotar is
being sent to prison. Benko is drunk and finally feels he fits in with
the others. The parents in Florida and the gypsy family are satisfied.
The status quo is therefore re-established. The demon for sale goes
on his way.
Démon à vendre est une pièce sur l’impossibilité d’échapper à
sa famille et à ses racines. Elle présente la collision de deux
cultures : celle de Benko Kotar (40 ans) et de Simone (25 ans),
anthropologue. Simone est d’origine bulgaro-gréco-allemande ;
après la chute du mur, ses parents, nouveaux riches, vivent en
Floride. Simone fait des recherches sur la sous-culture du clan
tzigane des Kotar et, pour se faire admettre rapidement par le
milieu, elle fait de Benko Kotar son amant provisoire. Benko est
moitié bulgare et se berce de l’illusion d’être différent des siens.
Lorsque la mère de Simone apprend la relation de sa fille avec un
Tzigane, elle engage une agence de détectives pour mettre fin à
cette histoire. Les détectives feignent l’enlèvement et la vente de
Simone comme esclave blanche au Kosovo pour la « racheter »
ensuite. Ils lui disent qu’elle a été vendue par Benko Kotar et son
frère Gogo Mourdar. Et, comme on ne peut pas arrêter le business
du clan, Benko sera prié par les siens d’aller en prison à la place
de son frère. La famille tzigane organise une joyeuse partie à
l’occasion de l’entrée de Benko en prison. Ivre, Benko se sent enfin
comme les autres. Les nouveaux riches de Floride et la famille
tzigane sont satisfaits. Le statu quo est ainsi rétabli. Le démon à
vendre poursuit son petit bonhomme de chemin.
