The Saviour! So how does an unprepared, egotistical and decadent person react to an opportunity to redeem humanity? And what about those near to him? In his play, Franzobel shows us a rather more passive than proactive world, one which insists on its fair share of happiness but believes that responsibility should be shouldered by the next man. This civilisation sprawls, neither believing to hope nor hoping to believe. Franzobel’s Messiah experiences the conflicts of our time first hand. A prisoner of its own cynicism and apathy, the civilization portrayed here wishes nothing more than to be able to believe again, innocently and purely. But is it actually possible to surrender oneself completely to one’s faith without succumbing to irony and compromise? If so, then the way forward might be free... but for what? Jésus aujourd’hui, Jésus à Vienne : gras, sans motivation, il vit dans un enfer familial bourgeois, lorsqu’il est subitement frappé par l’illumination. C’est lui, le messie ! Le rédempteur ! Comment un homme qui a une tendance à l’égoïsme et à la décadence réagit-il à la sommation de sauver l’humanité, alors qu’il n’est pas préparé à cela ? Et comment répond l’environnement à un tel défi ? Dans sa pièce, Franzobel montre une société qui attend au lieu d’agir. Qui fait valoir son droit au bonheur, mais qui cherche trop volontiers à se décharger de sa responsabilité sur le prochain. Ces genslà glandent et croient espérer ou espèrent croire. Le messie de Franzobel vit dans son propre corps un conflit de notre époque : emprisonné dans le cynisme et la passivité, notre société ne désire rien plus ardemment que de pouvoir à nouveau croire, de manière innocente et pure. Mais est-ce possible de s’adonner effectivement à la foi sans ironie, ni arrangements, ni réserve ? Alors la voie serait peut-être libre ... mais pour quoi ?
