Raninen and Rousku are low-paid fellow workers who fill the orders, chat idly about women and sex and play darts in their free moments. While simpleton Raninen is on his lunch break, sharper Rousku regularly turns a profit on the side. He sells paint and other supplies cash-in-hand to Jylhäkorpi, a thief who likes to hold forth on politics and sees himself as an old-fashioned-communist. Karita is the sales assistant who works upstairs. She has been dating Rousku and announces to him that she is pregnant. He refuses to believe he is the father and calls her slut. She doesn’t give up so easily. When he persists in denying his responsibility, she threatens him with exposure: she knows about his little scam with Jylhäkorpi. Rousku is cornered. The tension builds. Katja, the owner, starts dropping in to examine the account books. He has noticed discrepancies in the inventory. As the pressure mounts between Karita’s blackmail and Katja’s suspicions, Rousku is soon forced to make some moral choices. The play is a dark and humorous study of survival strategies at the bottom of the economic ladder. La pièce se déroule dans le sous-sol d’un entrepôt de fournitures de peinture et de décoration. Raninen et Rousku sont deux travailleurs sous-payés qui s’occupent des commandes et parlent de femmes et de sexe en jouant aux fléchettes dans leurs moments libres. Pendant que le nigaud Raninen est parti déjeuner, l’escroc Rousku met régulièrement quelque profit de côté. Il vend de la peinture et d’autres fournitures de la main à la main à Jylhäkorpi, un voleur qui aime s’étendre sur la politique et se prend lui-même pour un communiste à l’ancienne... Karita est l’assistante à la vente qui travaille au-dessus. Elle est sortie avec Rousku et lui annonce qu’elle est enceinte. Il refuse de croire qu’il est le père et l’insulte d’être une souillon. Elle n’abandonne pas si facilement. Lorsqu’il persiste à nier sa responsabilité, elle le menace de parler : elle est au courant de son petit trafic avec Jylhäkorpi. Rousku est coincé. La tension monte lorsque le propriétaire de la société, Katja, arrive pour vérifier les livres de comptes. Il a remarqué des irrégularités dans l’inventaire. Face à la pression, entre le chantage de Karita et les soupçons de Katja, Rousku est forcé de faire un choix moral. La pièce est une étude féroce des stratégies pour la survie en bas de l’échelle économique.
