Two young couples each move into a new apartment. The first
couple is enthusiastic and optimistic about the apartment. Where
they see potential, the second couple sees only flaws. The second
couple see the apartment as a temporary solution and view the
place, as well as each other, with scepticism. We follow the two
couples into adulthood and old age, and see how their attitudes in
the opening scene go on to affect the rest of their lives. We follow
them through partnership, childlessness and divorce until the man
from the first couple follows his wife into death. Contact between
the two couples rarely occurs, and then only on a supernatural level.
By the end of the play, we realise that the second couple has moved
into the apartment left behind by the first.
Deux jeunes couples emménagent chacun dans leur appartement.
Le premier couple est enthousiaste et optimiste, voit le potentiel
de leur appartement alors que l’autre ne voit que les défauts du
leur, le considère comme un pis-aller et se montre sceptique envers
l’appartement comme dans leurs rapports mutuels. Nous suivons
ensuite ces deux couples jusqu’à l’âge mûr et la vieillesse, et voyons
comment leur attitude de la première scène donne le ton des
personnages à travers la naissance d’enfants contre le refus d’un
enfant, la vie commune contre le divorce, jusqu’à ce que l’homme
du premier couple suive sa femme dans la mort. Un rare contact
se produit périodiquement entre les couples, à un niveau quasi
surnaturel, et nous comprenons finalement que le deuxième couple
n’a emménagé dans l’appartement qu’après le décès du premier
couple.
