The play is based on an article that appeared in the Norwegian
newspaper Klassekampen in February 2001. The article told the
story of Mongolian teenagers who beg and steal during the day
and who, at night, seek shelter from the cold down in the sewers. In
Orkhon’s Dead we meet five Mongolian teenagers who live in Ulan
Bator’s sewers. It is the middle of winter, and it is bitterly cold. In
the first scene, they attack a tourist, and drag him into the sewers
with them. But how are they going to make any money out of him?
In his bag, all they find is a business card and a manuscript. Most
of the action takes place in 2001, but we also meet the young
Mongolians three years later. They have started a journey. A journey
towards the West.
Cette pièce est inspirée de faits réels : en février 2001, un article
paru dans le quotidien norvégien Klassekampen relatait l’histoire
d’un jeune Mongol qui, par un froid extrême, avait dû chercher
refuge la nuit dans la chaleur des égouts, en mendiant et en volant
dans la journée. Dans La mort d’Orkhon, nous rencontrons cinq
jeunes Mongols qui vivent dans les égouts d’Oulan-Bator. Nous
sommes au milieu de l’hiver et il fait froid. Dans la première scène,
ils attaquent un touriste qu’ils entraînent à leur suite dans les
égouts. Mais comment pourront-ils obtenir de l’argent ? Dans son
sac, ils ne trouvent qu’une carte de visite et un manuscrit. Une
grande partie de la pièce se passe en 2001, mais nous retrouvons
les jeunes Mongols trois ans plus tard. Ils ont entrepris un voyage.
