READING COMMITTEE
COMITÉ DE LECTURE
Marina Abelskaïa
Theatre critic, translator, assistant of stage directors and interpreter
“What is currently happening in Russia is even more absurd than before!” the playwright
Vassily Sigarev stated recently. In this incongruous reality, the renaissance of drama is
yet to occur, as if all perceptions of the moment were avoiding drama, seeking refuge in
opposing, extreme genres. And so tragedies and comedies are popping up everywhere
in the Russian theatre landscape. Moreover, a particular tendency is appearing in the
construction of plays of all genres: the return to the past, giving rise to assessments of
people’s lives, as if an idea, like a splinter, was irksome, tormenting the inflamed minds
of creators: what have we missed by stepping over the past, what do we have to make up
for, reflect upon, undo and do again? For the enormous quantity of plays read, I warmly
thank the following remarkable personalities for their work and devotion to theatre:
Elena Alekseeva, Elena Fediakhina, Irina Marchuk and Galina Stoukalova.
» a dit
