CHARACTERS/PERSONNAGES
12 male/hommes
Laurent Gaudé 1972
cris
screams
Their names are Marius, Boris, Ripoll, Rénier, Barboni or
M’Bossolo. Burrowed into trenches, entrails of the earth from which
they emerge according to the ebb and flow of attacks, they share
the unbearable fraternity of the 1914 war. Out in front of them, a
victim of gas poisoning lies in his death throes. Further out still
rings out the horrible scream of the mad soldier that they imagine
to be lost between the two lines of the front: ‘the pig-man’. To their
rear, Jules, given leave, moves gradually away from them, in the
direction of normal life, but the voices of his companions in arms
pursue him relentlessly. They rise up like a song, like a memorial
of pain and tragic solidarity, collectively taking up a incantatory
narration, which also plunges us into the immediate instantaneity of
the battles, with density of sound and striking veracity. Twelve young
men in a muddy trench at the heart of the Great War, or how fate
inexorably bears down on them. The play is certainly confined to a
closed space, however this space is quickly opened up with powerful
lines: while one of them, Jules, makes his way to the rear for a few
days, a temporary respite before returning to the hell of the front,
two soldiers set out to find a chimera, a creature that is half-man
and half-beast howling to death, caught between the two camps in a
no man’s land resembling purgatory.
Ils se nomment Marius, Boris, Ripoll, Rénier, Barboni ou
M’Bossolo.
« l’homme-cochon ».
