frank
Frank is a young man who is content with his daily routine. His
girlfriend and mother encourage him to make changes in his life,
but Frank disagrees. A strange woman appears. She tells Frank
that he is imprisoned, and that his girlfriend is his prison guard.
When a friend from his past turns up, Frank sees him also as a
prison guard. Frank becomes increasingly anxious. His girlfriend
leaves him. Frank starts a lonely battle to escape from his prison.
He attacks his friend and kills his mother. But when he finally finds
the key to his cell, he realises that the door had been open all along.
Now Frank is free, his life is one big party. The whole world adores
him. But the more he is loved, the more insecure and suspicious he
gets. His anger builds and he feels he can trust no one. At the peak
of his success, he is all alone. He yearns for his girlfriend. However,
when she returns, she no longer wants to be with him. Again, Frank
is alone and feels imprisoned. The jury of the Scandinavian drama
competition that awarded Frank the 1st prize, summed up the play
in these words: ”A young man is shut inside a prison cell full of
open doors. He craves a ‘life project’. He dreams of consistency and
coherence, but gets lost in his own dramatic little world. This is a
playful fable about the essence of freedom. The play has a steady
theatrical form, with clear references to expressionist, surrealist
and absurdist writing. However, the author also has a clear, personal
voice and the play deals with the search for meaning in an original
way.”
