Three young people meet up on a Bucharest rooftop, one hot
summer night. Each of them is looking for something or is escaping
from something. They all want to forget, although there is nothing
worth forgetting in their lives. They are alienated and lost in their
own country or elsewhere, without even knowing it. And they have
just discovered they are living in a world too big for them where
they don’t actually have anywhere to hide. They’re ordinary people,
with ordinary dramas and joys. They met up by chance, for a short
break, a quick breath, a cigarette. Then they will keep on running,
and seeking and understanding. Maybe. And keep struggling with
themselves. The Sunshine Play is a hilarious drama/comedy about
this brief moment on a summer’s night, above the noises of the
city and beyond everyday life. It makes us, ordinary people, laugh,
cry, take a moment (maybe for a cigarette break?) away from our
own very ordinary dramas and joys. And you can understand, after
seeing the show, that a rooftop in Bucharest can be similar to a
rooftop anywhere in the world.
À Bucarest, trois jeunes gens se rencontrent sur un toit par une
nuit chaude d’été. Chacun d’eux cherche quelque chose ou veut
échapper à quelque chose. Ils veulent tous oublier, bien qu’il n’y ait
rien à oublier dans leurs vies. Ils sont étrangers et perdus dans leur
propre pays comme ailleurs sans même le savoir. Et ils viennent
juste de découvrir qu’ils vivent dans un monde trop grand pour eux
où ils n’ont en fait pas d’endroit pour se cacher. Ce sont des gens
ordinaires avec des drames et des joies ordinaires. Ils se rencontrent
par hasard pour une brève pause. Pour une cigarette. Ensuite ils
continueront à courir, à chercher et à comprendre et – peut-être – à
lutter avec eux-mêmes. The Sunshine Play est une « dramedie »
désopilante sur ce point de rencontre bref et quelconque d’une nuit
d’été, sur les bruits de la ville et sur l’au-delà de la vie quotidienne.
Elle nous fait rire et pleurer, nous les gens ordinaires, elle nous fait
prendre un moment (et réfléchir, peut-être pour une pause
cigarette ?) loin de nos propres drames et joies ordinaires. Et
on comprend, après avoir vu le spectacle, qu’un toit à Bucarest
peu ressembler à des toits partout dans le monde et prendre un
caractère universel.
