Life-Story of Zelma Redzoba (Kalv‚ne)<br />

The record of the interview (3 tapes, 187 minutes along with interview of<br />

M. M. LazdiÚa, in Latvian) is kept in the archives of the Oral History Centre<br />

at Daugavpils University, catalogue No. 195, abbreviated ñ DU MV: 195.<br />

Zelma Kalv‚ne was born in 1927 in ìPaozoliî, Saliena parish of Il˚kste<br />

region. She was the only child in the family of Matilde and Kriapplej‚nis Kalv‚ns.<br />

After her motherís death in 1936, she stayed with her father who later<br />

remarried. In 1944, she left Saliena Primary school and worked in her fatherís<br />

household. In the same year, Kriapplej‚nis Kalv‚ns was arrested for having<br />

joined the ëaizsargsí organization and his actions in it. The Military Tribunal<br />

of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the LSSR sentenced him to 10 years<br />

imprisonment with loss of rights for 5 years. On 25 March, 1949, Zelma<br />

and her stepmother Marta Kalv‚ne were deported as the family of a ëconvicted<br />

nationalistí to Lyubino region of Omsk district where they worked<br />

on ìNovaya Zariaî collective farm. In 1954, Zelma Kalv‚ne got married<br />

to Ritvalds Redzobs and gave birth to two daughters ñ Velta (1955) and<br />

Ruta (1957). In 1957, the Redzobs family returned to their homeland ñ<br />

Saliena parish and their third daughter Ausma was born in 1964. Zelma<br />

Redzoba worked in Lielborne collective farm as a warehouse keeper till<br />

retirement in 1986. At present, she and her husband run their family farm.<br />

The interview took place at Zelma Redzobaís house ñ in a well-ordered<br />

comfortable environment where everything reflects the industriousness of<br />

its owners. At first, the narrator was reticent but later she willingly shared<br />

her memories. The central event of her life-story is deportation: eviction<br />

from the family home on 25 March, 1949, the journey to the Siberia, work<br />

on the collective farm and everyday life in deportation. The narrator has an<br />

excellent memory and her life-story reveals precise details concerning the<br />

facts of everyday and family life in the Siberia ñ wedding celebrations,<br />

building a house and keeping house, buying things, etc. Their return to<br />

their homeland is described in detail, mentioning the attitude of the parish<br />

inhabitants to those who had been deported.<br />
