Introduction The method to be used to seal cracks and voids in waterproof concrete structures is described in the relevant Code of Practice [1], which provides principles and guidelines for this method. The subsequent sealing of cracks need not necessarily be considered an activity to remedy a defect. By contrast, subsequent sealing is often a necessary step to complete the task of “building a waterproof concrete structure”. Sealing works must always be provided for in the design. The designer must specify the materials to be used and methods to be applied to their installation. Provisions in the Code of Practice on Waterproof Concrete Structures This code of practice [1] requires the designer to consider “unexpected” leakages that are detected after completion already in the course of designing the waterproof concrete structure. Section 7, (5) of the code of practice [1] states that the design must provide for sealing measures in accordance with section 12 for separating cracks that occurred unexpectedly, or separating cracks that are wider than specifi ed in the design. However, such planned waterproofi ng works to cater to unexpected cases occur only on rare occasions in practice. By contrast, construction activities are dominated by the approach that “if a waterbearing crack occurs, it will be grouted.” The code of practice [1] itself supports this lenient attitude by a wording included in section 5.3, (7), where it says: “Waterproof concrete structures make it possible to subsequently seal leakages in a simple manner, provided the relevant points are accessible.” This statement suggests to the reader that, on the one hand, it is relatively easy to detect a point of water penetration in a waterproof concrete structure while, on the other, the sealing process itself does not usually pose any problems. In actual fact, sealing is not that easy in each and every case, especially if no prior design or plan exists. Own experience shows that contractors tend to prefer, for instance, the use of rapid-foaming polyurethanes to fi ll water-bearing cracks because such materials can stop water penetration within a very short period. Rapid-foaming polyurethanes show a strong reaction with the moisture in the crack, expand to about 20 to 30 times their liquid volume and form an open, thin-walled cellular structure in the crack [2]. No permanent sealing can be achieved with rapid-foaming polyurethanes [3]. Even a subsequent polyurethane injection will not result in a permanent sealing of the crack [2]. Sealing in accordance with the repair code of practice According to the Code of Practice on Waterproof Concrete Structures [1], section 12.3, (1), cracks, leaking joints and concrete textures must be fi lled with sealants in accordance with the DAfStb Code of Practice on the “Protection and Repair of Concrete Structures (Repair Code of Practice)” [4], Part 2. For sealants according to DIN EN 1504-5 [5], the list of samples contained in the Technical Building | Proceedings 54 th BetonTage Einleitung Die Herangehensweise an das Abdichten von Rissen und Hohlräumen in wasserundurchlässigen Betonbauwerken – Weiße Wannen – ist in der WU-Richtlinie [1], die diese Bauweise regelt, beschrieben. Das nachträgliche Abdichten von Rissen ist nicht grundsätzlich als Mangelbeseitigungsmaßnahme anzusehen. Vielmehr ist das nachträgliche Abdichten oftmals ein erforderlicher Arbeitsschritt zur Erfüllung der Bauaufgabe: „Herstellung eines wasserundurchlässigen Bauwerks aus Beton“. Eine Abdichtungsmaßnahme ist in jedem Fall zu planen, wobei der Planer die zu verwendenden Materialien und das Verfahren, mit denen sie einzubauen sind, festzulegen hat. Regelungen in der WU-Richtlinie Die WU-Richtlinie [1] fordert den Planer auf, sich bereits in der Planungsphase der WU-Konstruktion Gedanken über „unerwartete“ Undichtigkeiten zu machen, die nach der Ausführung erkannt werden. In Abschnitt 7, (5) der WU-Richtlinie [1] heißt es sinngemäß, dass planmäßig Dichtmaßnahmen nach Abschnitt 12 für unerwartet entstandene Trennrisse bzw. Trennrisse, die breiter sind als geplant, vorzusehen sind. Solche vorab geplanten Dichtmaßnahmen für unerwartete Fälle fi ndet man in der Praxis allerdings sehr selten. Es herrscht eher die Mentalität vor: „Wenn ein wasserführender Riss entsteht, dann wird verpresst“. Die WU-Richtlinie [1] selbst unterstützt diese lockere Haltung mit einer Formulierung in Abschnitt 5.3, (7). Dort heißt es: „Wasserundurchlässige Betonbauwerke ermöglichen auf einfache Weise die nachträgliche Abdichtung von Undichtigkeiten, wenn die Zugänglichkeit gegeben ist.“ Diese Aussage suggeriert dem Leser, dass einerseits das Auffi nden einer Wasserdurchtrittsstelle bei wasserundurchlässigen Betonbauwerken vergleichsweise einfach ist und andererseits, dass das Abdichten selbst in der Regel kein Problem darstellt. Tatsächlich gelingt das Abdichten nicht immer so einfach, vor allem dann, wenn keine Planung vorliegt. Eigene Erfahrungen zeigen, dass Ausführende z. B. gern schnellschäumende Polyurethane (SPUR) zum Füllen von wasserführenden Rissen verwenden, weil so ein Wassereintritt sehr kurzfristig gestoppt werden kann. Die schnellschäumenden Polyurethane reagieren heftig mit der Feuchtigkeit im Riss, dehnen sich bis auf das 20- bis 40-fache ihres Flüssigvolumens aus und bilden im Riss eine off ene und dünnwandige Zellstruktur [2]. Eine dauerhafte Abdichtung ist mit schnellschäumenden Polyurethanen nicht zu erreichen [3]. Auch eine Nachinjektion mit Polyurethan (PUR) führt nicht zu einer dauerhaften Abdichtung des Risses [2]. Abdichten nach der Instandsetzungsrichtlinie Gemäß WU-Richtlinie [1], Abschnitt 12.3, (1) hat das Füllen von Rissen, undichten Fugen und undichtem Betongefüge mit abdichtenden Stoff en nach der DAfStb-Richtlinie „Schutz- und Instandsetzung von Betonbauwerken (Instandsetzungsrichtlinie)“ [4], Teil 2 zu erfolgen.
