this reason, special emphasis needed to be put on the particle
shape when selecting the aggregates. Even in the
ideal case, however, there will always be gaps between the
individual particles, which is why the addition of ultrafi ne
sand (0–1 mm) was considered to close these gaps. For
this reason, the grading curve of the aggregates used was
compared with the ideal grading curve according to Fuller
and Thompson. The resulting diff erence in the ultrafi ne
range was compensated by the addition of silica sand
[4, 5].
Mix designs
Considering the criteria referred to above, several SWB ®
mix designs were developed. Their exact composition is
not published yet. These mixes diff er on account of the
cement grades (CEM II/B-S 42,5 R/NA vs. CEM III/A 52,5
N-HS/NA), the fl y ash and ultrafi ne fl y ash added, the additives
used (microsilica suspension and aluminosilicate)
and the corresponding mass ratios. Only polycarboxylate
ether based plasticizers were used.
Slump fl ows after fi ve minutes ranged from 530 to
670 mm.
Results of additional tests of acid-resistant
concretes
An important criterion to assess the acid resistance of
concretes are the additional performance tests in which
the concretes are subjected to various testing procedures
to check their impermeability and resistance. The concretes
must adhere to limit values defi ned for selected
testing criteria (Table 1). The results of the additional tests
are shown in Table 2. Apart from CPC consultants and
Berding Beton GmbH, Cemex Deutschland AG, Spenner
Zement GmbH & Co.KG, BauMineral GmbH, MC-
Bauchemie Müller GmbH & Co. KG and BASF SE were
involved in the development project.
* With a mean value of -2.25 wt.-%, the mass reduction in the reference mix is exceptionally high, which is due to surface scaling (i.e. solubility in acids) of parts of the
aggregate. The damage depth measured under the microscope remains within the usual range.
einhalten (Tab. 1). Die Ergebnisse der zusätzlichen
Prüfungen können Tab. 2 entnommen werden. An dem Entwicklungsprojekt
waren neben CPC consultants und Berding
Beton GmbH auch Cemex Deutschland AG, Spenner
Zement GmbH & Co.KG, BauMineral GmbH, MC-Bauchemie
Müller GmbH & Co. KG und BASF SE beteiligt.
