. Do not shut down negative air system during encapsulating procedures,
unless authorized by the Contracting Officer in writing.
c. Start abatement work at a location farthest from the exhaust units and
proceed toward them. If an electric power failure occurs, immediately stop
all abatement work and do not resume until power is restored and exhaust
units are operating again.
d. At completion of abatement work, allow exhaust units to run as required to
remove airborne fibers that may have been generated during abatement
work and cleanup and to purge the work area with clean make up air. The
units may be required to run for a longer time after decontamination, if dry
or only partially wetted asbestos material was encountered during any
abatement work.
8. Dismantling the System: When a final inspection and the results of final air
tests indicate that the area has been decontaminated, exhaust units may be
removed from the work area. Before removal from the work area, remove and
properly dispose of prefilter, and seal intake to the machine with 6 mil
polyethylene to prevent environmental contamination from the filters.
H. Asbestos abatement work shall not commence until:
1. Arrangements have been made for disposal of waste an acceptable site.
2. Arrangements have been made for containing and disposal of waste water
resulting from wet stripping.
3. Work areas and decontamination enclosure systems and parts of the building
required to remain in use are effectively segregated.
4. Negative air system is in place and properly operating.
5. Tools, equipment and material waste receptors are on hand.
6. Arrangements have been made for building security.
7. All other preparatory steps have been taken and applicable notices posted and
permits obtained.
3.2 REMOVAL OF ASBESTOS
A. Removal of Vinyl Asbestos Floor Tile and Mastic (Category I Nonfriable ACM):
1. Cover wall surfaces, up to 6 feet A.F.F., with 4 mil plastic sheeting sealed with
tape.
2. Establish negative pressure system as described in 3.01, G., above.
3. Floor tiles shall not be allowed to become friable. Breakage shall be
minimized. Contractor shall not use a mechanical chipper, and shall not saw,
grind or sand ACM.
