EXTRAORDINARY CHARACTERISTICS OF THE WEATHER
IN MAY AND JUNE 2010
By
MÓRING, ANDREA – LAKATOS, MÓNIKA – NAGY, ANDREA – NÉMETH, ÁKOS
Keywords: May and June 2010, cyclones, precipitation, strong winds.
The weather in Hungary in May and June 2010 was determined by two Mediterranean
cyclones called Zsófia and Angéla. Zsófia caused an extraordinary amount of precipitation
to fall all over the country between 15 and 18 May, 2010. The precipitation which fell over
the four days equalled the monthly average – in certain places, twice or even four times the
monthly average. The days from the 15 th to 18 th May also had extraordinary winds.
Cyclone Angéla brought precipitation in excess of 30 mm between 30 May and 4 June, but
amounts exceeding 120 mm were also registered in the hills.
While the mean precipitation between 1971 and 2000 was 586.3 mm annually, 140.5 mm
in the spring and 61.1 mm in May, the amount of precipitation in May 2010 was 179.1 mm.
A significant amount of precipitation fell in June as well, but less than in May. While precipitation
in June was 73.4 mm between 1971 and 2000, the corresponding figure for June
2010 was 115.8 mm.
CLIMATE CHANGE, EXTREMES AND WATER MANAGEMENT
By
SOMLYÓDY, LÁSZLÓ – NOVÁKY, BÉLA – SIMONFFY, ZOLTÁN
Keywords: water management, climate change, extreme weather, storage, water
retention, EU Water Framework Directive.
The strategic tasks in water management will greatly depend on whether the last twenty
years’ changes in meteorological characteristics continue and whether these trends will become
even stronger. Another important question is whether the precipitation extremes can
be ascribed to the climatic changes only or whether they are also rooted in human activities.
For the time being, there is significant uncertainty in the answers proposed to both questions,
even at the European level.
