IN MAY AND JUNE 2010<br />

The weather in Hungary in May and June 2010 was determined by two Mediterranean<br />
cyclones called Zsófia and Angéla. Zsófia caused an extraordinary amount of precipitation<br />
to fall all over the country between 15 and 18 May, 2010. The precipitation which fell over<br />
the four days equalled the monthly average – in certain places, twice or even four times the<br />
monthly average. The days from the 15 th to 18 th May also had extraordinary winds.<br />
Cyclone Angéla brought precipitation in excess of 30 mm between 30 May and 4 June, but<br />
amounts exceeding 120 mm were also registered in the hills.<br />
While the mean precipitation between 1971 and 2000 was 586.3 mm annually, 140.5 mm<br />
in the spring and <strong>61.</strong>1 mm in May, the amount of precipitation in May 2010 was 179.1 mm.<br />
A significant amount of precipitation fell in June as well, but less than in May. While precipitation<br />
in June was 73.4 mm between 1971 and 2000, the corresponding figure for June<br />
2010 was 115.8 mm.<br />

The strategic tasks in water management will greatly depend on whether the last twenty<br />
years’ changes in meteorological characteristics continue and whether these trends will become<br />
even stronger. Another important question is whether the precipitation extremes can<br />
be ascribed to the climatic changes only or whether they are also rooted in human activities.<br />
For the time being, there is significant uncertainty in the answers proposed to both questions,<br />
even at the European level.
