This intention resulted in writing an Egmont-
Book in which the inserted two series of
delineations of the Egmont-portraits simultaneously
can be examined and discussed. Copies
of captions on panels which were fastened under
the portraits at that time, also form part of the
delineation-series and are inserted in the
Egmont-Book too.
Through the years many publications on the
Egmont subject have reached us, but an overall-
Egmont working has never been prepared until
now.
The book begins with a number of chapters of
universal kind. After these, each Lord and Count
of Egmont will be discussed in separate chapters.
For each Lord and Count a genealogy has
been prepared, followed by the Woutersz. and
van Alkmade portraits of the nobleman in order
to be able to discuss the differences between the
two series. Copies of the most relevant
chronicles and a note-list are included in each
chapter too. The chapters indicate the origin of
the sources. The book describes the main
pedigree of the House of Egmont. Collateral
branches and others will not be discussed. Any
way, it was hard enough to refrain from
examining these collateral branches because the
information to be found in this respect is
enormous. This is due to the fact that those
families belonged to the less important nobility
and therefore were allowed to fulfill public
functions, contrary to the upper nobility. Those
public activities have carefully been recorded
through the years.
The intention to write this book is not only to
present the Egmont Lords and Counts in all
their glory shown on huge Woutersz. and van
Alkemade portraits, but also to make accessible
the records and sources regarding this special
subject.
I do hope you enjoy reading it.
