23.3 Pumping:<br />

without damaging the foundation excavation or <strong>works</strong>. Where<br />

practicable, all substructures shall be constructed in open excavation<br />

and where necessary the excavation shall be shored and braced or<br />

protected by cofferdams. The cofferdam should be carried to adequate<br />

depts. And heights, safely designed and constructed with suitable<br />

dimensions and protection and shall be made as water-tight as<br />

practicable for facility of construction of the work to be done inside<br />

them. The interior dimensions of the cofferdams shall be such as to<br />

give sufficient clearance for the construction and inspection and to<br />

permit installation of pumping machinery etc. inside the enclosed area.<br />

The cofferdams shall be sufficient heights to prevent ingress of water<br />

into the foundation pits and to protect green concrete or masonry<br />

against damage from tides or sudden rising of the steam and to<br />

prevent damage of the foundation by erosion.<br />

Unless otherwise permitted, no excavation shall be made outside the<br />

enclosed area and the natural stream bed adjacent to the foundation<br />

shall not be disturbed without permission from the Engineer.<br />

Cement grouting or other approved methods may be used at the<br />

discretion of the contractor to prevent or reduce seepage and to protect<br />

the area to be excavated if the soil is porous.<br />

Adequate pumping arrangements shall be made for dewatering<br />

foundation trenches and other areas of construction where dewatering<br />

is essential and keeping them dry while masonry or concrete or other<br />

construction is in progress and till the concrete or mortar of masonry<br />

has sufficiently set and construction can be proceeded without<br />

pumping.
