8.0 CARRYING OUT EXCAVATION AND STACKING THE EXCAVATED<br />

STUFF<br />

a) In carrying out excavation, ground shall be broken at such places<br />

and in such lengths as shall be sanctioned by the Engineer. Work of<br />

excavation shall proceed in such proportion at one time as the<br />

Engineer may direct, and no permanent <strong>works</strong> shall be begun, until<br />

the Engineers have approve of the excavation which shall be out to a<br />

sufficient depth and width to receive the permanent work and to<br />

allow of their being sufficiently placed, built, constructed, laid or<br />

erected. The length of trench excavated ahead of the pipe laying<br />

and the length of trench which may remain open at one time shall at<br />

all times be subject to the approval of the Engineer. It shall be at no<br />

time greater than can properly be protected from caving.<br />

b) The <strong>road</strong> metal and also the rubble packing ad khankies (if any) first<br />

be stripped off for the whole width of the trench and for the whole<br />

extent of the masonry or chamber required and separately deposited<br />

in such place or places as may be determined upon by the Engineer.<br />

In case of the metal packing or khandkies not being so deposited or<br />

being mixed up with excavated materials and not available for<br />

refilling and making good the excavation the cost of the new metal,<br />

packing or khandkies required shall be charged to the Contractors.<br />

c) The other material from the excavation shall be deposited on either<br />

side of the trench leaving a clear berm on one side at least 40 cm<br />

wide or at such further distance from the edges of the trench as may<br />

be necessary to prevent the weight of materials from casting the side<br />

of the trench to slip or fall or at such a distance and in such a<br />

manner as to avoid covering fire hydrants sluice valves gas-syphone,<br />

manholes covers and the like and so as to avoid abutting any wall or<br />

structure or casing inconvenience to the public or other persons or<br />

otherwise as the Engineer may direct.
