1) Soil of sorts, sand, gravel, soft murum and other similar soft or<br />

loose materials. :<br />

Soils of all sorts, sand, gravel soft, murum softman, chopan yellow<br />

soil, etc., shall included all material of earthy or sandy nature which<br />

can be easily ploughed or small shingle and gravel which can be<br />

easily removed. Removal of small boulder not exceeding 0.03 cu.m.<br />

or 30 litres (about one c.ft.) accruing in the strata will be included in<br />

the rate for this item.<br />

2) Hard murum :<br />

This shall include all kinds of disintegrated rock or shale or<br />

indurated clay free from boulders larger than 0.03cu.m. or 30 litres<br />

(about one cu.ft.) and can be removed with pick and shovel though<br />

not without some difficulty.<br />

3) Hard Murum & Boulders :<br />

This shall include all kinds of disintegrated rock or shale or<br />

indurated clay interspersed with boulders less than half cubic metre<br />

and larger than 0.03 cu.m. or 30 litres (approx one c.ft.) which do<br />

not normally need blasting and can be removed with pick, bar,<br />

wedges, and hammer. Boulders bigger than 1/2 cu.m. will be paid<br />

for as soft or hard rock according as it is soft or hard rock.<br />

The classification of the excavation would be decided by the<br />

Engineer and his decisions shall be final and binding on the<br />

contractor. Merely the use of explosives in excavation will not be<br />

considered as a reason for higher classification unless blasting is<br />

clearly necessary in the opinion of the Engineer.
