5.4 The SBR should be wiped clean, fluxed and then placed in the socket<br />

with the bulb towards the back of the socket. The groove in the SBR<br />

must be located on the retaining bed in the socket and the retaining<br />

heel of the SBR firmly bedded on its seating.<br />

5.5 It is necessary to ensure that the SBR fits evenly around the whole<br />

circumstance, removing any bulges which would prevent the proper<br />

entry of the spigot end. In the larger diameters, this operation may<br />

be assisted by forming a second loop in the SBR opposite the first,<br />

then pressing the loops flat one after the other.<br />

6.0 JOINTING OF C.I. / D.I. PIPES, SPECIALS AND APPURTENANCES<br />

BY LEAD<br />

The joint between two D.I. Pipes shall be made by the use of styrene<br />

butudine rings (SBR) while any other joint wherein, rubber rings can<br />

not be used; lead joints shall be made by the Contractor as<br />

specified.<br />

6.1 After the Engineer has checked and certified that pipes, specials and<br />

appurtenances are laid in proper alignment and level, the sterilized<br />

spun yarn of approved quality shall be driven tightly against the<br />

inside base of the socket with suitable tool. A ring of hume rope<br />

covered with clay is wrapped around the pipes at the end of the<br />

into which molten lead shall be poured. The lead used shall be soft<br />

and of approved quality consisting of 99.99 % pure lead on analysis<br />
