For deep or inaccessible situations, wire crates can be made smaller<br />

subject to the approval of the Engineer.<br />

Wire crates built in-situ, shall not be larger than 7.50 meter x 3 meter x<br />

0.60 meter, nor smaller than 2 meter x 1 meter x 0.30 meter. Sides of<br />

large crates shall be securely stayed at intervals of not more than 1.50<br />

meter to prevent bulging.<br />

The netting shall be made by fixing a row of spikes on a beam at a<br />

spacing equal to the mesh. The beam must be a little longer than the<br />

width of neeting required. The wire is to be cut to lengths about three<br />

times the length of the net required.<br />

Each piece is bent at the middle round one of the spikes and the<br />

weaving commenced from one corner. A double twist shall be carefully<br />

done by means of a strong iron bar, five half turns being given to the<br />

bar at each splits.<br />

The bottom and two ends of the grate or mattress shall be made at one<br />

time. The other two sides shall be made separately and shall be<br />

secured to the bottom and the ends by twisting adjacent wires together.<br />

The top shall be made separately and shall be fixed in the same<br />

manner as the sides after the crate of mattress has been filled.<br />

Wherever possible, crates shall be placed in position before filling with<br />

boulders. The crate shall be filled be carefully hand packing the<br />

boulders as tightly as possible and not by merely throwing in boulders.
