execution of the work in the vicinity of such building. If the Engineer<br />

shall require the adoption of any special or extra measures or<br />

precautions, the contractors shall forthwith adopt and supply the<br />

same, but this provision is not to be read or understood as in any<br />

degree of relieving the contractors from responsibility or from<br />

liability under Clause 54 of General Conditions of Contract, in<br />

respect of claims made against the Corporation by for loss or<br />

damage which may be caused to any such building by the execution<br />

of any of the <strong>works</strong> or otherwise. After the work is completed near<br />

buildings, the contractor shall remove any shoring and make good<br />

any cutting out or other damage that may have been done.<br />

17.0 VENTILATION<br />

The contractor shall provide adequate ventilation and efficient<br />

apparatus to keep all excavation, trenches tunnels and headings<br />

structures, sewers and manholes free from all gases whether<br />

generated in strata arising from the use of explosive for blasting<br />

sewage gases or otherwise and he shall take precautions to<br />

ascertain that they are in a safe condition before allowing workman<br />

to proceed.<br />

18.0 PUMPING OUT WATER<br />

The contractors shall provide and work at their own cost all pumps<br />

engines and machinery requisite to keep the trenches for the sewers,<br />

drains or foundations and all other excavations clear of water,<br />

whether sub-soil water, storm water, leakage from tanks, wells<br />

drains, sewers, water mains, tide water etc. so that there may be no<br />

accumulations of such water and that no setting out may be done,<br />

no masonry may be laid, no concrete deposited, no joints made and
