10.4 CONSTRUCTION OPERATIONS<br />

10.4.1 Weather and seasonal limitations:<br />

Laying shall be suspended while free-standing water is present on the<br />

surface to be covered or during rain, fog and dust stones. After rain,<br />

the bituminous surface, prime or tack coat, shall be blown off with a<br />

high pressure air jet to remove excess moisture or the surface left to dry<br />

before laying shall start. Laying of bituminous mixtures shall not be<br />

carried out when the air temperature at the surface on which it is to be<br />

laid is below 10 o C or when the wind speed at any temperature exceeds<br />

40 km/h at 2m height unless specifically approved by the Engineer.<br />

10.4.2 Preparation of base :<br />

The base on which Dense Graded Bituminous Material is to be laid<br />

shall be prepared in accordance with Clauses 501 and 902 as<br />

appropriate or as directed by the Engineer. The surface shall be<br />

thoroughly swept clean by a mechanical broom, and the dust removed<br />

by compressed air. In locations where mechanical broom cannot<br />

access, other approved methods shall be used as directed by the<br />

Engineer.<br />

10.4.3 Geosynthetics:<br />

Where Geosynthetics are specified in the Contract this shall be in<br />

accordance with the requirements stated in Clause 703 of MORT&H<br />

<strong>specifications</strong>.<br />

10.4.4 Stress absorbing layer:<br />

Where a stress absorbing layer is specified in the Contract, this shall be<br />

applied in accordance with the requirements of Clause 522 of<br />

MORT&H <strong>specifications</strong>.
