d) Coarse aggregates<br />

In case suitable sand is not available in adequate quantities<br />

within a reasonable and economical limit, the contractor may<br />

be allowed to use the crushed or pulverised stone or gravel<br />

either alone or mixed within natural sand in parts. The stone<br />

or gravel shall be clean sharp and free from dust etc. and<br />

shall conform to the latest I.S. 383.<br />

The percentage of crushed stone to be mixed with sand shall<br />

be such as to obtain in fineness modulus of the blended sand<br />

within the limits specified above and/or as approved by the<br />

Engineer after laboratory test.<br />

All coarse aggregates used in concrete <strong>works</strong> shall consist of crushed<br />

rock gravel or other approved inert material.<br />

i) Broken or crushed rock from sound blue basalt or black trap<br />

free from zeolite or other common impurities shall be used in<br />

the concrete as coarse aggregate. The particles of aggregate<br />

shall be clean, hard, tough or elongated pieces. The particles<br />

of aggregate shall be clean, hard, tough durable, free from<br />

deleterious substance and shall contain no soft, flat or<br />

elongated pieces. The course aggregate shall have specific<br />

gravity not less than 2.6 and the water absorption measured<br />

after being immersed for 24 hours in water shall not be more<br />

than 6% by weight. The maximum percentage of deleterious<br />

materials in the coarse aggregate shall not exceed 5% by<br />

weight in the aggregate when tested in conformity with<br />
