The mortar used should be stiff. The brick work shall be kept wet<br />

while the work is in progress for atleast seven days after<br />

completion, to the entire satisfaction of the Engineer. On Sundays<br />

and Holidays, when the work is not in progress, the masonry shall<br />

be watered continuously by engaging Bhisties. Watering shall be<br />

done carefully so as not to wash out mortar of the joints. The<br />

Engineer shall be at liberty to engage labours at contractor’s cost<br />

to water the work, should the Contractors fail to do so. Should the<br />

mortar perish i.e. become dry, while or powdery, through neglect<br />

in watering, the work shall be pulled down and rebuilt at<br />

contractor’s cost.<br />

The whole of the masonry work shall be carried up at one uniform<br />

level throughout but where breaks are unavoidable, the joint shall<br />

be made in good long steps, raked so as to prevent cracks arising<br />

due to separation of old and new work. All junctions of walls shall<br />

be formed at the time the walls are being built and cross walls<br />

shall be carefully bonded into the main walls.<br />

When new work is to be added to existing structing, the old work<br />

must be prepared to receive new work by roughening and<br />

grouting with a layer of rich mortar and both be carefully bonded<br />

together.<br />

During the rains the <strong>works</strong> to be carefully covered without extra<br />

charge so as to avoid mortar being washed away.<br />

d) Colouring of Brick<br />

For colouring bricks, an earthern-ware box shall be provided a<br />

few cm longer each way than a common brick, and half filled<br />

with the liquid of the required description to about the consistency
