INTRODUCTIONABSTRACTMycotoxins are toxic chemical products formed by fungal species that colonize crops in the fieldor after harvest and thus pose a potential threat to human and animal health. Even thoughrecommended agricultural practices have been implemented to decrease production of mycotoxinsduring crop growth, harvesting and storage, the potential for significant contamination still exists.The significance of these unavoidable, naturally occurring toxicants to human and animal health, theincrease in mycotoxin regulations and global trans-shipment of agricultural commodities highlightthe need to provide successful counteracting strategies. The approaches to this are varied and maybe categorized as physical methods, chemical decontamination, treatments with adsorbents (organicor inorganic) and biological detoxification to decrease the bioavailability of mycotoxins to the hostanimal.Certain treatments have been found to reduce levels of specific mycotoxins, however, no singlemethod has been developed that is equally effective against the wide variety of mycotoxins whichmay co-occur in different commodities.71
