«Más que a mi vida», pensó Jill, pero bajó la mirada y guardó silencio. Hablar de sus sentimientos con Daniel le resultaba violento. Pero tenía razón, lo único que la mantuvo allí, a pesar del delirio que estaba viviendo, era el amor que sentía por él, y ese amor no había cambiado. Aunque ahora Evan era un completo desconocido para ella. En realidad, todos lo eran. —Jill, puedes preguntarme lo que quieras, sé que debes tener muchas dudas. Debía de encontrarse bajo algún tipo de shock que la había vuelto idiota de repente. Evan no era un caso aislado. Todos eran licántropos, estaba entre una familia de hombres-lobo, y muchos detalles empezaban a tener sentido. Incluso el hombre que les había atacado debía de ser uno. —Eres una mujer muy lista, Jill —reconoció Daniel al intuir los pensamientos de la chica—. Hace más de tres siglos que ningún mortal sobrevive a la mordedura de un licántropo. Podría decirse que ahora toda la especie es pura desde su nacimiento —estaba empleando aquella voz calmada y serena que usaba en los momentos difíciles. —El hombre que nos atacó, también era un… un hombre-lobo, ¿verdad? —preguntó con resentimiento. —No —contestó Daniel. Desvió la mirada hacia William. El vampiro asintió con un leve gesto, dándole su permiso para que continuara hablando—. Era un vampiro. Jill sintió cómo las defensas que había levantado para afrontar aquella situación se venían abajo, y empezó a temblar. —¿Los vampiros también son reales? —preguntó con voz ronca. Un nudo se formó en su garganta, amenazando con ahogarla. —Sí —esta vez fue William quien contestó. Jill se giró de golpe hacia él, había olvidado por completo su presencia. Y el vampiro añadió con voz fría—: Somos tan reales como tú. Jill no podía apartar sus ojos de William. «Ha dicho somos, ha dicho somos», se repetía a sí misma sin parar. —Jill —la llamó Daniel. Acercó una mano a su rostro y, con suavidad, lo giró para que apartara la vista de William y se concentrara solo en él. Por un instante temió que no pudiera soportarlo—. Existe otro mundo muy diferente al que tú conoces. Un mundo que mi familia y la de William protegen desde hace siglos, y para que puedas entender de qué te estoy hablando, hay una historia que debes conocer. Le habló de la rebelión y de la guerra que aconteció después. Le habló de Victor y de Sebastian, del pacto y de los años de paz que sucedieron a aquella alianza hasta el día de hoy. También le habló de los renegados: vampiros y licántropos que se habían negado a vivir acatando las leyes, y de lo peligrosos que eran tanto para los humanos como para ellos. Y de cómo los vampiros, liderados por la familia Crain, y los licántropos, liderados por la familia Solomon, aunaban fuerzas para acabar con aquellos peligrosos asesinos. Sin embargo, evitó hablarle de Amelia y del pulso de poder que hubo entre Samuel y él, y de otros muchos secretos que únicamente concernían a sus protagonistas. Jill escuchó sin pestañear, absorta en el relato. Se sentía como una niña a la que le estaban contando un cuento para dormir y pensaba que, en los labios de Daniel, la historia no parecía tan terrorífica como en un principio había imaginado. —Me sorprende la forma en la que estás asumiendo esta situación. Otro en tu lugar pensaría que había perdido el juicio —dijo Daniel. Jill le sostuvo la mirada. —Sé que no estoy loca, así que no me queda más remedio que aceptar que lo que está pasando es real —dijo convencida, y mucho más tranquila que al principio. Daniel se agachó frente a ella, para quedar a la altura de sus ojos. —Solo me queda hacerte una pregunta, y es la más importante. Jill asintió con la cabeza, dando a entender que estaba preparada. —¿De verdad quieres pertenecer a esta familia y cargar con el peso de nuestro secreto? —¡Por supuesto! —contestó sin dudar. Era la primera vez, en diecinueve años, que sentía que tenía una familia de verdad. Qué importaba si eran hombres-lobo, vampiros o los enanitos de Blancanieves; ellos la querían, podía sentirlo. Daniel le dedicó una sonrisa cargada de gratitud, y respiró aliviado. —Ve a ver a Evan, le oigo resoplar desde aquí. Jill se levantó, aún le temblaban las rodillas. Sus ojos se encontraron con los de William, y tuvo la impresión de que su mirada era ahora un poco más dulce. Ese detalle la animó a sonreírle, en un intento por mitigar la frialdad que desde un principio existía entre ellos. William le dedicó una leve sonrisa y se levantó para abrirle la puerta. Jill se detuvo antes de salir, tragó saliva y giró sobre sus talones para mirar a Daniel. —¿Y si hubiera contestado que no? —preguntó, frunciendo el ceño. —Eso ya no tiene importancia, ¿no crees? —contestó Daniel sin demostrar ninguna emoción. —Quiero saberlo. Daniel la miró fijamente unos segundos antes de contestar. —Hace mucho tiempo me comprometí a proteger a los humanos de seres como nosotros, pero el compromiso que tengo
con mi clan es aún mayor, y haría cualquier cosa para protegerlo. ¿Comprendes lo que quiero decir? Cualquier cosa. Jill asintió con un nudo en la garganta y, sin decir nada más, salió del estudio.
