1 Introduction
The ”Natural Dyes Product Research and Development Project” was started
in Finland in autumn 2000 and it will continue until year 2003. The
project is supported by the European Union and led by the EVTEK Institute
of Arts and Design.
In the “Natural Dyes Product Research and Development Project” we
will concentrate on the possibilities to increase the use of natural dyes as
a source of a dye in textile production. We are aiming to combine the long
tradition and knowledge of natural dyes with the modern possibilities in
textile design and technology. One of the main targets in our project is to
develop products, which have both an ecological life cycle and are highlevel
designed.
In Finland we have a strong and living tradition in using natural dyes.
In our country there are plenty of enthusiasts in the field of leisure activities,
but there is quite a lack of commercial use of natural dyes. It has also
been very interesting and encouraging to us in Finland to follow the research
work on natural dyes in the other countries of Europe. The results of
researching and the increasing environmental awareness of the consumers
are urging us in our work.
