The “Natural Dyes Product Research and Development Project” 2000-2003
Researching and product development
During our project we will be aiming to develop production of textiles,
which are made by using natural dye techniques (interior textiles and
clothing). Products should fulfil the highest technical and industrial standards.
Products should as well comply with the ecological requirements.
Modern technology and natural dyes
An important element of the project is to research the possibilities of natural
dyes in industrial use. We will try to combine the tradition of natural
dyes with modern technology in designing and in production of the textiles.
During the Natural Dyes Product Research and Development Project
the industrial textile printing process will be tested. We will also research
the possibilities to use natural dyes in the new digital textile production.
In this field we will co-operate with textile printing companies and other
specialists needed.
Natural Dyes Project and the year 2003
In the year of 2003 we hope that we have succeeded to develop products
together with our target groups and co-operating companies. Products
will be ready for marketing providing a high level of design and an ecological
life cycle. The production process has been tested to ensure its ecological
life cycle. Hopefully natural dyes will then be a competitive alternative
to synthetic dyes.
In the future we are concentrating on using cultivated dye plants and
extractions made of natural dyes. Hopefully natural dyes would be able
to offer also some new economical possibilities to the people living on the
countryside; farmers and farm tourism.
4 Printing textiles with natural dyes – from handprinted textiles
to industrial production
The researching work in printing with natural dyes started already in
1998. Ulla Lapiolahti developed the basic printing method for direct printing
during her studies in the Textile Department of the EVTEK Institute
of Arts and Design.
