Be particularly careful when using contractions for there is, it is<br />

and the like, since contractions tend <strong>to</strong> obscure the verb. One often<br />

sees faulty constructions such as What's the main issues at stake<br />

here? or Where's my shoes? or <strong>The</strong>re's still <strong>to</strong>ns of debris <strong>to</strong> be<br />

cleared. Such errors are common in speech, and indeed are sometimes<br />

inevitable because speakers may start a sentence with a singular<br />

subject in mind and then go on <strong>to</strong> form a plural. Also, using a<br />

plural in this type of sentence would sometimes sound overly formal<br />

in speech. Writers, however, must be held <strong>to</strong> a higher standard.<br />
