The researcher then progressed from question to question (Appendix 12) when the<br />

participant had completed each response. The same format was used for all<br />

interviews. Occasionally a participant appeared nervous and the researcher paused,<br />

gave them time to gather their thoughts and their breath, <strong>of</strong>fered them water, and re-<br />

commenced when the participant was ready to do so.<br />

Three staff nurses chose not to be tape recorded for the interviews. Detailed written<br />

notes were taken for these interviews, and these were read back to the staff<br />

participant at the end <strong>of</strong> the interview in order to ensure that all the information<br />

provided had been accurately recorded.<br />

All residents (n=38) formed the potential interview population (Table 4.7). However,<br />

only 13 residents met the inclusion criteria for the interview data collection. These<br />

13 residents were invited to participate, and <strong>of</strong> these seven agreed to participate.<br />

Twenty-five residents were severely cognitively impaired (with little or no ability to
